The interstellar probe self-corrected a glitch before engineers could intervene, highlighting the growing fragility of humanity's most distant spacecraft.

Voyager 1, the farthest human-made object from Earth, went silent for about two days in October before reestablishing contact on its own, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The spacecraft missed scheduled check-ins with NASA's Deep Space Network antennas on two consecutive days before its signal returned, days before engineers could attempt a remote fix.

Mission manager Kareem Badaruddin said the event was unlike anything seen before in the probe's long run, adding that the team now expects unusual behavior given the spacecraft's age.

JPL engineers believe Voyager 1 entered a protective mode after one set of thrusters went offline and backup thrusters automatically activated, a safeguard built into the spacecraft's systems. The exact cause of the lapse is still under investigation.

Voyager 1 is nearly a light-day away from Earth, meaning a command takes about a day to reach it and a reply takes another day to return, a distance that will reach the full light-day mark later this month.

The incident comes shortly after engineers carried out a power-saving maneuver nicknamed the 'Big Bang,' which swapped several onboard devices for lower-power alternatives to extend the mission's life as its plutonium power source continues to fade. A similar adjustment was made earlier on Voyager 2.

Both Voyager probes, launched in 1977, have operated far beyond their original mission to explore the outer planets and have been operating in interstellar space for years. Despite shrinking power reserves, NASA has expressed hope that the twin spacecraft could keep returning data into the 2030s.
