Why Is the Sky Dark at Night?

This sounds like the easiest question in the world — the Sun went down, silly! But look closer and it turns into one of the deepest puzzles ever asked. The darkness over your head is actually a clue about how the whole universe began.

The puzzle hiding in plain sight

Here's the strange part. Scientists believe the universe holds more stars than there are grains of sand on all of Earth's beaches. If the universe went on forever and had been there forever, then no matter which direction you looked, your line of sight would eventually hit a star — the way a person standing in an endless forest sees tree trunks in every single direction, with no gaps. The whole night sky should glow like the surface of the Sun. It doesn't. It's black. For hundreds of years, that blackness bothered astronomers, because it meant something about 'endless and forever' had to be wrong.

The universe has a birthday

The answer turned out to be amazing: the universe hasn't been here forever. It began about 13.8 billion years ago, and light — the fastest thing there is — still needs time to travel. Light from very faraway stars simply hasn't had enough time to reach your eyes yet, no matter how bright those stars are. The dark gaps between stars aren't empty; they're where the light is still on its way. So the night sky is dark because the universe is young enough to remember being born. When you look at the blackness between stars, you're seeing proof of the Big Bang — with no telescope at all.

You just did real science

Notice what happened: you looked at something completely ordinary, asked 'wait, why?', and the answer reached all the way back to the beginning of everything. That's not a trick — it's exactly how real astronomy works, and this puzzle (grown-ups call it Olbers' paradox) stumped famous scientists for centuries before anyone got it right. The sky is full of questions like this, hiding in plain sight: Why is the Moon sometimes out in the daytime? Why do stars twinkle? Keep asking.
