Every poster of the Solar System lies to you — it has to, or the page would be blank. The truth about the distances is the single most mind-adjusting fact in astronomy, and it's worth feeling at least once.
Shrink the Sun to a soccer ball
Put a soccer-ball Sun on the ground. On that scale, Earth is a peppercorn about 26 meters away — cross a street to reach it, and the Moon is a pinhead four centimeters from the peppercorn. Jupiter is a marble a block and a half out; Neptune sits nearly a kilometer from the ball. And the nearest other star? On the same scale, it's another soccer ball roughly 6,500 kilometers away — put the Sun in Paris and Proxima Centauri lands in North America. Planets are not scattered through space; they are motes of dust separated by oceans of nothing.
Measure it in light
Astronomers feel the scale through light-time, and the ladder is worth memorizing: the Moon is 1.3 light-seconds away — the delay you can hear in Apollo radio recordings. The Sun is 8.3 light-minutes. Neptune is about 4 light-hours. Voyager 1, the farthest human-made object, is around 23 light-hours after nearly fifty years of flying. And then the ladder's cruel step: the next star is 4.2 light-years. Everything humanity has ever visited sits inside one light-day; the gap to anywhere else is measured in years at the fastest speed physics allows.
Emptiness you can trust
This is why the 'asteroid field' of the movies is fiction. Real spacecraft cross the asteroid belt without maneuvering and with essentially zero collision risk — typical asteroids are separated by around a million kilometers. It's also why the Sun can hold 99.8% of the Solar System's mass while the planets combined are a rounding error, and why a favorite bar bet is true: the other seven planets, lined up diameter to diameter, would just about fit in the gap between Earth and the Moon. Space is, overwhelmingly, space.
Why the scale is good news
The distances sound like a prison sentence, but reframe them: within that one light-day lie eight planets, hundreds of moons, ice-buried oceans, rings, comets — more unexplored territory than humanity could exhaust in a thousand years, all reachable with engines we already know how to build.
