Nobody has ever seen a Martian river — yet we know they existed. Mars is a four-billion-year-old crime scene, and the rovers are the detectives.
Reading a dry riverbed
From orbit, Mars is covered in shapes any geologist recognizes instantly: branching valley networks, teardrop islands, deltas fanning out where rivers once met lakes. Shapes like these form one way — flowing water, and lots of it. The verdict from the landscape is unanimous: billions of years ago, Mars was warm enough and wet enough for rivers, lakes, and possibly seas.
The rovers touch the evidence
Orbital photos suggest; rovers confirm. Curiosity, working Gale Crater since 2012, drove across an ancient lakebed and found rounded pebbles — stones tumbled smooth by a river — and clay minerals that only form in standing water. Perseverance is now working Jezero Crater, an unmistakable river delta, drilling core samples and caching them in sealed tubes for a future mission to carry home. It is the first interplanetary evidence hand-off ever attempted.
Where the water went
Mars is small — about a tenth of Earth's mass — and that was its undoing. Its interior cooled, its magnetic field faded, and the solar wind stripped the unprotected atmosphere over billions of years. With thin air, liquid water can't persist on the surface; today it survives as polar ice, buried glaciers, and frost. The question that drives the whole program: in the long wet era before the drying, did anything start to live? That is what those sample tubes may answer.
