The telescope that redefined astronomy was sketched before some of its engineers were born. Here's the long, strange pipeline every mission crawls through — and how the rovers got their names from schoolkids along the way.

The alphabet of patience

Big missions live their lives in lettered phases. Pre-Phase A is a sketch and a dream; Phases A and B turn it into requirements and designs; C and D are the long years of building and testing; E is the mission actually flying; F is the graceful end. Between phases stand reviews where a mission can be reshaped or cancelled outright — gates guarded by boards asking one question: prove it will work. The system is slow on purpose. You cannot patch a spacecraft at Jupiter, so the paranoia is front-loaded: shake tables, vacuum chambers, thermal cycling, rehearsed failures — every torture the flight will bring, applied early and on the ground.

Webb, the cautionary triumph

The James Webb Space Telescope is the pipeline's extreme case in both directions. Conceived in the mid-1990s as Hubble's successor, it launched on Christmas Day 2021 — a quarter century and roughly ten billion dollars later, having survived redesigns, overruns, and a near-cancellation by Congress. The reason for the caution: its origami deployment involved hundreds of single-point failures, any one of which could have made it a very expensive piece of debris. Every one worked. The lesson agencies drew isn't 'never again' — it's that some instruments are worth a generation of patience, and the flagship class exists precisely for missions too hard to do any faster.

Named by twelve-year-olds

The pipeline's most charming tradition sits at the very end: NASA's Mars rovers are named by children. A nationwide essay contest chose Sojourner in 1995, Spirit and Opportunity in 2003, Curiosity — from sixth-grader Clara Ma in 2009 — and Perseverance, from seventh-grader Alex Mather in 2020. The winners typically attend the launch of a robot carrying their word to another planet. Webb, by contrast, was named for a NASA administrator from the Apollo era. However a mission gets its name, the arc is the same: an idea survives the reviews, the budget fights, and the shake table — and then, one morning on your launch schedule, it finally becomes a countdown.
